To know Him better

Devotions by Vinu Paul

My dear friends,

“For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength”.    Ephesians 1:15-19 NIV

It is remarkable that in all of his writings, Paul’s prayers for his friends contain no appeal for changes in their circumstances. It is certain that they lived in the midst of many dangers and hardships. They faced persecution, death from disease, oppression by powerful forces, and separation from loved ones. Their existence was far less secure than ours is today. Yet in these prayers you see not one petition for a better emperor, for protection from bad rulers or a cry for the next meal. Does that mean it would have been wrong to pray for such things? Not at all. Jesus himself invites us to ask for daily bread. What was the most important thing God could give them? To know HIM better! The eyes of their heart may be enlightened’. He knew the heart controls everything. His desire was that we may know that God is holy- it is to have a more vivid sense of the reality of God’s presence and shared life with Him. He does not see prayer as merely a way to get things from God but as away to get more of God himself. Prayer is striving to take hold of God. (Is 64:7). Our next season of prayer and fasting will be of this quality-to know him better. When we know him better, it doesn’t matter what situations or circumstances we may face. God will be our answer!

Wishing you a great month ahead. A great season of knowing God better.

Blessings,

Vinu Paul
